E27 – TWO ISLANDS BAY TO REFUGE BAY
We departed Two Islands Bay, Manchinbar Island in the Wessel Group with our buddy boat ‘Lady D’ who had stepped off from Torres Strait with us. Two old mates, Gary and Will we’re delivering the new to them boat to Darwin for it’s ultimate journey to Perth via the Kimberlie’s.
Now we were behind the Wessels, the seas had flattened out and we had some beautiful, flat water sailing…the kind I love !
East Arnhem Land, around the Wessel Group of Islands, began producing my favorite eating fish…The Spanish Mackeral. These guys can grow BIG and I’ve personally landed them to about 45kg in Papua New Guinea. Here we were fortunately landing smaller ones around the 5-10kg mark…Perfect to catch and perfect freezer size! We also caught Big Eye Tuna but released them as they don’t taste anywhere near as good as Spanish Mackeral.
By the time we made a perfectly calm anchorage at Refuge Bay, after a 75nm passage we had landed 2 Spanish Mackeral, lost 3 more and released a couple of Big Eye Tuna to boot !
