E63 – LANGKAWI TO KHO KRADEN
Leaving Malaysia for Thailand.
I was perfectly placed at Rebak Marina, on Rebak Island, Langkawi for a ripper of a rain squall that came through early morning. Punching winds to 40+kts INSIDE the marina, I sure wouldn’t have wanted to be anywhere else! Rebak Marina is completely landlocked and accessible via a narrow entrance. Once inside, there is a large swing basin and lots of berths that are very well maintained. Ashore, there is still a resort running and a restaurant and bar on the opposite side of the island (literally a 2 minute walk from the marina) and apart from the prices at the resort side, a very pleasant place to relax. Marina guests can also use the swimming pool at the resort. The cruising community at Rebak is one of the best I have ever experienced and we highly recommend a stop here during your travels.
Telaga Harbour
I made a brief move to Telaga Harbor Marina north of Rebak and only a few miles away where Tan returned and Starlight was whole again. Rebak Marina has Immigration and Customs right at the marina, but the Harbor Master is still located at Kuah, up to 45 minutes by taxi. It’s not a bad drive though, and Grab ride sharing is easy to download and easy to use. Alternatively, the Telaga Harbor Marina can help you check in and out for a fee of about 250 MYR. Expensive by Langkawi standards as the going rate is about 150 MYR for an agent, but it is efficient and quick.
Our Fisher Panda generator had been overheating since Australia at random times and as it became more and more frequent and the fault could not be sourced while it was still mounted in the boat, I had a mechanic completely remove the entire generator from Starlight and take it to his workshop to try to fix it. In the meantime, we would go sailing to Thailand without it….it wasn’t working anyway and we had the reliable Honda portable 2.2kva generator that had never skipped a beat while filling in for our Fisher Panda.
Heading to Kho Kraden
Clearing out of Langkawi and Malaysia using the services of the Telaga Harbor Marina was quick and simple and the next day we were headed north with little wind and what there was, again, on the nose but after a few hours, the wind filled in and we had a cracking sail north to the island of Kho Kraden.
Where we picked up a high quality, well maintained Thai Marine Parks public mooring.
